  • Counseling may be more effective than in the past.
The circumstances of residential living can often motivate a child to actively engage in counseling, even if they've been reluctant to use it in the past.

  • Your child may progress more quickly.
Counseling adds an “outside voice” to help reinforce what your child is learning in the Talisman Academy program. Counseling strategies are aligned and integrated with the Talisman program.

  • Connecting your child's Talisman experience to family goals.
Counseling can assist your child with understanding how choices and actions at Talisman relate to life at home and your expectations and goals for him or her.

  • Improve social interaction.
The counseling sessions provide your child a place to be 100% candid about problems with others and work out solutions; without worrying about consequences or if it will affect his/her relationships with the staff or peers.

  • Better problem solving.
Often children can more effectively address concerns, review poor choices, and think through plans for better outcomes when they can do it privately or one-on-one.

  • Weekly monitoring of mental health concerns
For students who have previous or co-existing psychiatric / mental health issues, counseling provides weekly monitoring by a licensed clinician so those concerns can be recognized and addressed quickly.

  • Ongoing counseling maintains continuity
For students who are likely to require continued counseling support after leaving Talisman Academy, weekly counseling at the school helps them to maintain the rhythm and familiarity with the counseling process .

  • Collaboration with Talisman Academy staff
Weekly communication with the Talisman staff provides an additional source of useful information to help them serve your child more effectively. My 35 years of experience working with children is available to the team working with your son or daughter.

  • Monthly phone calls with parents
Our monthly call provides you another source of guidance and support for understanding residential interventions and dealing with challenges you may encounter with your child while he/she is enrolled at Talisman.

Counseling with a child who is in a residential setting can be quite different from counseling done with a child who’s living at home. While the circumstances of residential living do put some limitations on counseling, they can also create some unique and valuable opportunities.
